Vancouver Day in the Life Photographer | Walks with Molly

I have worked with Cheryl for two years now on a project that she would like to continue for as long as her mother, Molly, is alive. Each year, she always has the same plan - to photograph a work day evening where she spends time with her mom and her boys on a walk outside before wrapping it up for the hectic day. However, this time, things didn't go as she planned and she had me come back so we can get it just right.

As documentary photographers, our job is to photograph life as we see it, not what we aspire for it to be.

Life, as a lot of us can relate, is unpredictable and can go off track, despite all the planning. But we need to tell ourselves that when that happens, it is ok. Embracing that change can be a welcome relief. After all, the need to get it right all the time can be exhausting and weighs heavy on the shoulders.

I look at these photos from 2017 and realize that the best moments are the ones that were unplanned. Those are the moments that make me see Cheryl for the strong mother and caring daughter that she is. Because what she does is not easy by any stretch - sandwiched between generations and caring for both sides on her own. She is such an inspiration and I hope she sees that she doesn't have to get it just right to be one.
